‘Man’s world’ is a photographic project focused around places that can be deemed safe to others, but for many women, they often feel unsafe. The project title is a direct reference to MARINA’s song ‘Man’s world’, which speaks about struggles that vulnerable people have, and men always tend to have an advantage, solely because they’re a man.
“If you have a mother, daughter, or a friend
Maybe it is time, time you comprehend
The world that you live in, ain't the same one as them
So don't punish me for not being a man”
- MARINA, Man’s World.
I wanted to show anonymity within the project, but stories are shared by the use of titles and captions alongside the photographs. These stories have been submitted by anonymous people to provide more of that anonymity. Inspired by Eliza Hatch’s project: ‘cheerupluv’, ‘man’s world’ captures the locations but also shares women’s stories of a time where they have been harassed, or in this case, felt unsafe while walking the streets. In this current climate, walking is our main source of freedom, and most of the time, we can’t even do that as we are wary of bad things happening to us. It needs to change.
